Some Wrestling Training Drills for the Mixed Martial Arts

Grappling Training Drills : Speed Takedowns - Wrestler works out with 2 training partners - first he performs a takedown on one man, then he immediately performs a takedown on the next. The wrestling coach coaches him on proper takedown form and position.

Grappling Training Drills : Backstep - wrestler practices back step and sets up a shoulder throw (no-gi) on his wrestling partner's right arm, then immediately backsteps and sets up a shoulder throw (no-gi) on his wrestling partner's left arm. Great slow-motion footage of this drill included.

Grappling Training Drills : Shoot and Sprawl - Wrestler A slaps wrestler B's leg, and wrestler B sprawls to the mat. After sprawling, wrestler B immediately shoots a single leg takedown on Wrestler A without completion. They repeat, but this time with a double leg takedown. Slow motion footage of drill included.

Grappling Training Drills : Countdown to Takedown - Wrestler A shoots takedowns on Wrestler B while the coach counts from 5 to 1. Great drill for promoting aggressive action in your grapplers when wrestling on the mat.

Grappling Training Drills : Marty Buxton Wrestling Drills Part 2 - Grapplers working control tie ups and takedowns in the clinch. Good footage to watch - no sound.

Grappling Training Drills : Standup - Defensive wrestler is in turtle or quarter position, offensive wrestler is to the side and behind him, with his arms tied around his waist, and his hands locked around his navel in a bodylock. Defensive wrestler performs a stand up wrestling escape, and as he does, offensive wrestler lifts him and drops him to the mat back into turtle or quarter position.. Offensive wrestler lifts his opponent, sweeps his legs, and drops him back to the mat in the turtle position.

Grappling Training Drills : Penetration against the wall - great solo wrestling drill for developing proper penetration in low wrestling takedowns.

Grappling Training Drills : Peekout - Wrestler A dummies for Wrestler B while he performs peekout drill standing and in a down position. Involves wrestler B putting his head through the space between Wrestler A's arm and the side of his body.

Grappling Training Drills : Team movement - a good way to quickly work wrestling footwork skills and movement fundamentals with the entire team - you can coach each member's errors easily as they are all doing the same thing and mistakes are easy to spot.

Grappling Training Drills : Shot and sprawl 01 - another grappling team movement drill, but now including a shot and sprawl.

Grappling Training Drills : Pop under - Wrestler A moves in on Wrestler B with his head down. Wrestler Bwraps his arm around Wrestler A's head. Wrestler A gets his hips under his head and performs double leg. Performs this wrestling drill repeatedly switching sides each time.

Grappling Training Drills : Stance maintenance with elbow control - Wrestler A moves in on Wrestler B for Double Neck tie position. Wrestler B controls Wrestler A at the elbows while fighting for good stance and structure.

Grappling Training Drills : Extended doubleleg - Grapplers in training session working both on the ground and standing up. No sound.

Grappling Training Drills : Elbow control to defend headlock - Defensive wrestler is in offensive wrestlers headlock. Defensive wrestler grabs opponent at the elbow, steps in, and pushes the headlock off of his head.

Grappling Training Drills : Zone Work - another takedown drill.

Grappling Training Drills : Get up to stance - Solo wrestling drill - grappler is lying flat on mat - wrestling coach says "go!" and wrestler has to jump to wrestling stance on his fast as he can.

Grappling Training Drills : Foot sweeps - Two wrestlers in clinch move backwards down mat, offensive wrestler performs foot sweep on defensive wrestler.

Grappling Training Drills : Elbow control - Offensive wrestler posts on defensive wrestlers head, shoulder and arm. Defensive wrestler pushes offensive wrestlers arm across his own body at the elbow for elbow control.
